ST. LOUIS HERB SOCIETY

The St. Louis Herb Society is a not-for-profit organization founded in 1941 for the study of herbs.  Our purpose is "to further the use and knowledge of herbs" and our duties consist of planning, planting and maintaining the historical herb garden at the Tower Grove House in the Missouri Botanical Garden, St. Louis, Missouri.  We also provide herb education courses and have a Speaker's Bureau.

Herb Garden Renovation

The St. Louis Herb Society Herb Garden, located at the rear of Henry Shaw's home at the Missouri Botanical Garden was completely renovated in 2004. With the cooperation of the MBG staff, Herb Society members designed a garden featuring hundreds of “plants with a use”. Completely new irrigation and drainage systems and rich soil from the Missouri-Mississippi confluence enable herbs to thrive. Four areas are devoted to highlight a specific use: culinary, medicinal, fragrant and utilitarian herbs. Parterre gardens showcase silvery plants, while display areas feature unusual varieties of lavender, rosemary, basil and sage.

Herbs grown in the Garden are used in the STLHS education classes, crafts, potpourri, bouquet garnish, tussle mussies and other applications. Two sculpture areas are included; one focal point features a sundial statue on a bed of thyme, the other, a millstone fountain honoring long-time member Dottie Raether.

The St. Louis Herb Society members work in the Herb Garden on Tuesday mornings from April to October and are available to answer any questions regarding herbs.
